Trip Overview
The Channel Islands, often referred to as the "Galapagos of North America," are a breathtaking archipelago located off the coast of southern California. These remote and rugged islands are a true scuba diving haven, offering a diverse array of marine life, kelp forests, historical shipwrecks, and awe-inspiring underwater landscapes.
The Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary, established in 1980, encompasses an expansive 1,470 square miles of pristine ocean surrounding the five main islands: Santa Barbara, Anacapa, Santa Cruz, Santa Rosa, and San Miguel. This protected marine environment is a true haven for scuba divers, boasting a remarkable biodiversity that has earned it the moniker "the Galapagos of North America."
The Channel Islands' lush kelp forests are a prime draw for scuba divers, offering a mesmerizing underwater landscape teeming with vibrant marine life. Descend into these verdant underwater gardens and you'll be greeted by a kaleidoscope of colors, from the swaying fronds of the giant kelp to the vibrant sea stars, urchins, and nudibranchs that call these waters home. Keep an eye out for elusive creatures like the giant black sea bass, bat rays, and playful sea lions that frequent these kelp-lined coves and canyons.
The Channel Islands' waters are also home to a rich maritime history, with numerous historical shipwrecks waiting to be explored by adventurous divers. From the 170-year-old wreck of the Winfield Scott passenger vessel to the sunken WWII Grumman Avenger TBF-1-C aircraft, these sites offer a glimpse into the region's storied past. While some wrecks are accessible to divers of all skill levels, others pose a more challenging proposition, requiring advanced training and experience to navigate.
