ABOUT THE NIKON Z SERIES:
Nikon Z7 Underwater
The Nikon Z7 is Nikon's new flagship full frame mirrorless camera and using the Nikon Z7 underwater is pure pleasure. With a 45.7 MP full frame sensor and a native ISO of 64, the image quality on this camera is spectacular. In fact, the image quality of the Nikon Z7 rivals its DSLR predecessor, the Nikon D850. Although the autofocus is slightly slower than the D850, it is still pretty amazing, and 90% of the sensor is covered with autofocus points! The electronic viewfinder is the best in the class with 3.69 million dots and an excellent refresh rate. You can now change settings and review images all in the viewfinder. For photography, especially macro photography, we recommend the Nikon Z7 over the Nikon Z6. This is because the additional resolution is great for cropping macro images and for tack sharp details.
Nikon Z7 Quick Specs:
- 45.7 MP full frame sensor
- Native ISO of 64
- 5 axis in-body image stabilization (IBIS)
- Hybrid phase-detection/contrast AF with 493 AF points
- 9 fps burst
- 4K video @ 30 fps
- 4K video line skipping readout in full frame mode (lower video quality than Z6)
- 1/200 flash sync speed
Nikon Z6 Underwater
The Nikon Z6 is the Z7's little sibling. It is a very similar camera with the difference being in a reduced resolution (24.5 MP), slightly higher native ISO (100), and less autofocus points. That being said, it's still an excellent camera. Furthermore, this is Nikon's best camera for video. With 4K @ 30 fps capability, this camera has a full pixel readout in full frame mode. On the otherhand, the Nikon Z7 can only do a line skipping readout in full frame mode, due to the extra resolution. This means the video image quality is higher in the Nikon Z6 than the Z7 - and many people are choosing the Z6 for underwater video.
Nikon Z6 Quick Specs:
- 24.5 MP full frame sensor
- Native ISO of 100
- 5 axis in-body image stabilization (IBIS)
- Hybrid phase-detection/contrast AF with 273 AF points
- 12 fps burst
- 4K video @ 30 fps
- 4K video full pixel readout in FX/full frame mode (higher video quality than Z7)
- 1/200 flash sync speed
