Recsea Housing for New Sony RX-100 II Camera

Recsea, known for its high-end underwater camera housings, has recently developed and released an excellent housing for the Sony RX-100 II. Considered to be one of the best compact camera systems on the market, the RX-100 II deserves a high quality housing and Recsea provides that.

The Recsea housing is very easy to use and control. The full range of the RX-100 II controls can be used, including the scroll wheel and the front control ring. It is very compact and maneuverable in the water, and it can be used with wide angle and macro wet lenses.

First Thoughts on the Sony RX-100 II Wide-Angle Underwater Performance

By Nirupam Nigam

On August 4th I dove the Eureka Oil Rig, off the shores of San Pedro, California, with the newly released Sony RX-100 II (RX-100M2), the new Recsea housing, the UWL-04 ultra-wide conversion lens, and dual Sea and Sea YS-D1 strobes.

When taking this underwater, my first thoughts were that this is great compact setup! The ergonomics make learning how to operate the system a matter of minutes, instead of a matter of hours or a matter of days. I would just be sure to add buoyancy floats to the arms as it is rather negative underwater.

The image quality is amazing for a compact camera! It handles the dynamic range often dealt with underwater very nicely and the detail is great. However, you may need to use higher ISO in low light underwater conditions (such as under a rig) because f/1.8 has a low depth of field even with wide-angle images. The wide angle conversion wet lens works great with the system and produces beautiful wide-angle. The focus speed is very quick, and I captured many great moments that I wouldn’t have been able to capture with other compact cameras.

Overall the controls on the housings worked perfectly, although a few times I accidently set off the video recording. I will be sending Recsea some feedback on this control and hopefully they can put a guard over the red button.

Are the RX-100 and RX-100II housings different?

The Sony RX-100II has a slightly larger depth due to its tilting LCD screen, so Recsea had to make a new back for the housing. Other than that, it is essentially the same small housing. You can read our 15 Recsea RX-100 underwater housing reviews, to get an idea how customers are enjoying the housing.
