The Sony 24mm F1.4 GM FE lens is a compact wide-angle prime lens that's part of the G Master lineup. The 24mm focal length is excellent in a wide variety of situations, and with its maximum aperture of F1.4, it has great low light performance. If you're looking for a good all-rounder that's capable of shooting landscapes, street scenes, underwater or at night, you can't go wrong with the Sony 24mm F1.4.
Compared to other 24mm fast prime lenses, the Sony is noticeably more compact, lightweight and discrete. Weighing in at only 15.7 oz., or 445g, it's roughly 50% lighter than its closest competitors, something that's very relevant when shooting in the street or when using this lens as part of an underwater setup. You usually have to compromise on weight and size with fast primes but to achieve incredible bokeh and stunning low light performance, that's no longer the case.
When it comes to image quality, as you'd expect with a Sony G Master lens, images are pin-sharp corner to corner, even wide open at F1.4. You will see a slight increase as you stop it down, but the difference is minimal, and images are perfectly usable at any aperture.
Despite this lens being a wide-angle, you're able to isolate subjects from the background well as it produces pleasing bokeh that comes from an 11-bladed circular aperture design. Combine that with the tack-sharp, fast and accurate autofocus, thanks to Direct Drive SSM technology, the Sony 24mm F1.4 can make subjects pop.
